Effingham Post 120 won a pair of Junior American Legion baseball games Sunday, hosting Breese and Champaign in a round-robin style three-game afternoon.
After Breese and Champaign squared off in the first game of the day, Effingham beat Breese 9-3 and edged Champaign 5-4 to improve to 26-3 on the season.
In Saturday action, Effingham hammered visiting Salem 11-1 in five innings, although it was a costly victory as Jonah Zink was hit in the face with a pitch and will miss some time with some broken bones.
Post 120 plays at Mahomet tonight and begins hosting its own eight-team Fourth of July Tournament Friday.
Sunday
Effingham 9, Breese 3
A five-run fourth inning helped Post 120 erase a 3-2 deficit, making a winner of starter Tyler Bushue despite allowing a three-run outburts in the second.
Sam Thoele singled twice with two RBIs and Andrew Grahn doulbed twice with three RBIs to do a lot of Effingham’s damage, while Patrick Schutzbach singled twice with an RBI. Matt Hecht hit an RBI double and Tyler Pilcher had an RBI single, while Mitchell Dasenbrock chipped in a single.
Effingham 5, Champaign 4
“This was a good win against a solid team,” said Post 120 coach Chris Brown. “We’re pretty proud of the players.”
Thoele wasn’t sharp as he walked six in six innings of work, but he also fanned 10. Hecht struck out the side in a perfect seventh, and Effingham made him the winner by pushing across a run in the home half of the final frame.
“Brad Reedy walked with one out and stole second,” recapped Brown. “With two outs, Alex Brown was intentionally walked and then Grahn walked to load the bases. Hecht followed with the game-winning single to left.”
Alex Brown hit a two-run homer in the third inning, while Greg Schmidt and Austin Hayes each doubled.
“The guys did a good job of staying focused, particularly after Alex got beaned for the second time after his homer,” said Brown. “Hopefully they realize they aren’t in little league anymore.”
Saturday
Effingham 11, Salem 1
Reedy struck out five in four innings against only two walks and a base hit, while Schmidt doubled home three runs in a rout.
Effingham led just 1-0 going into its half of the third inning, but proceeded to score five runs in each of the next two frames to blow it open.
Hecht singled twice and drove in a pair, while Brown singled, doubled and knocked one in. Reedy also singled.
“We’ll mis Jonah’s bat and defense,” said Brown of his injured player. “But he’ll still contribute with his leadership and experience.”

GUANGZHOU: Organizers of the 16th Asian Games are hailing the biggest sponsorship in the event’s history, 500 days out from the opening ceremony, an official with the organizing committee said yesterday.
“We have made remarkable achievements … in terms of marketing development since the organizing committee was authorized by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) to be independently responsible,” Liu Jiangnan, deputy general secretary of the Games’ organizing committee, said. “I can tell you the total fund so far is five times the amount collected by the organizing committee of the 2006 Asian Games in Doha, Qatar,” he added, refusing to reveal the total sponsorship funds.
In the past, the OCA has managed Asian Games marketing, Liu said.
“The achievement represents the host city’s utmost effort to avoid the impacts of the global financial crisis,” Liu said.
So far, 30 companies have signed sponsorship deals with the Games organizing committee - the largest number in Asian Games’ history, according to Liu.

The Brewers said Monday that Jeffress, the 16th overall selection in the 2006 draft and assigned to Single-A Brevard County, will begin his suspension immediately and will be out into the 2010 season.
“We are obviously disappointed because Jeremy has such great Major League potential, and this is a setback in his career,” Brewers General Manager Doug Melvin said. “We support Major League Baseball’s drug programs and as an organization we will continue to assist Jeremy.”
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported last week that Jeffress admitted to testing positive for marijuana at the tail end of the 2007 season, when he was suspended 50 games. The paper also reported he tested positive for marijuana again in a test administered by the Brewers, and then disciplined.
Another positive test, the report said, will result in a lifetime ban.

A 21-year-old right-hander, Jeffress also was suspended for 50 games on Aug. 30, 2007. He was Milwaukee’s top pick in the 2006 amateur draft, the 16th selection overall, and received a $1.55 million signing bonus.
He was 2-1 with a 2.18 ERA in five starts and one relief appearance for Class-A Brevard County of the Florida State League when he was suspended Monday. He went 1-3 with a 7.57 ERA in eight starts for Class AA Huntsville of the Southern League earlier this season.
“We are obviously disappointed because Jeremy has such great major league potential, and this is a setback in his career,” Brewers general manager Doug Melvin said in a statement. “We will continue to assist Jeremy and help him with his problem as long as he wants to help himself.”

SINGAPORE, June 21 - A young Philippine footballer in Singapore for the Asian Youth Games has caught H1N1 flu, leading his teammates to be quarantined and matches against the Philippines postponed.

The Singapore government said a 14-year-old from the Philippines football team developed a fever during a practice session on Friday, but was now in a stable condition. He had arrived on Thursday from Manila with 18 teammates and two coaches.
“The Asian Youth Games will go on. The health and safety of all participants remain our paramount concern,” said a spokesman for organiser the Singapore Sports Council.
The Asian Youth Games, which involves around 1,400 teenagers competing in nine sports, are a warm-up for the inaugural Youth Olympic Games that Singapore will host in 2010.
Singapore said there are now 126 confirmed cases of H1N1 flu in the city-state. The World Health Organisation, in an update on the spread of the new flu strain on Saturday, said the number of worldwide cases had risen to 44,287, with 180 deaths.
“It may be a matter of time before we see more cases arising from local transmission,” the government said in a statement.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Phillies slugger Ryan Howard’s consecutive games streak is in jeopardy after he was hospitalized with flu symptoms.
The 2006 National League MVP has played 342 straight games since May 25, 2007, the longest active streak in the majors. But manager Charlie Manuel said Howard was unavailable against the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday night.
Howard was 0 for 3 with a walk in Friday night’s 7-2 loss to the Orioles. He chugged home from first on a double by Jayson Werth in the first inning.
Howard went to the hospital after the game. Manuel said Howard’s temperature had reached 104 degrees, but the first baseman was released after midnight.
Matt Stairs replaced Howard in the cleanup spot and Greg Dobbs filled in at first base.
